Why Carimport exists
Alex Wong spent his college years in Japan. He finished his studies there, stayed close to the Japanese motor trade, and saw how much of it a Malaysian buyer never gets to see.
He came home to a market where an imported car could be quoted at one price and invoiced at another, and where your choice was whatever a dealer had already bought. Carimport started in 2013 to do it the other way round: buy the car you actually want, direct from the source, and price it in full before anyone commits. He still runs the company.
We would like the whole trade to work this way. One itemised quotation before you commit, and one advisor who handles your car from the first enquiry to handover.
We buy direct from Japan, the UK and Australia, so a shortlist is three markets wide rather than one.

Five tools now, the first built in 2018, each one made to answer a question you would otherwise have to ask us.
The first was the costing system behind every quotation, written in 2018 and worked on every year since. Duty tables, shipping rates and handling charges all live in it, which is why a written quotation and a public estimate produce the same figure rather than two different ones.
Four more have followed, and each began the same way: something customers kept having to ask us for, turned into something they can look up themselves. The auction sheet before the bid. The listings the trade keeps to itself. Where a car is this week.
None of it is bought in. It is written and maintained here, so when a customer needs something the system does not do yet, that is a change we can make rather than a request we pass on.

The advisors
A small team by design, hired slowly and trained before anyone takes on an import of their own.
They work the same auctions from the same room and hand each other cases, so what one advisor learns on a UK listing is not lost on the next one. Hiring is slow on purpose. A new advisor sits through a long interview and is trained before they take on an import of their own.
